The women who run the packhouse

Fifty-five per cent of our team are women, and the packhouse is where their care shows most.

Every stem that leaves Hillview Blossoms passes through the packhouse, and the packhouse runs on the skill of the women who work it. Grading, bunching, sleeving and boxing are all done by hand, and every bunch carries the judgement of the person who made it.

We are a team of forty, and fifty-five per cent of us are women. That is not an accident. Hillview was founded by two women with the goal of creating good, steady work for women in our community, and the farm sponsors schooling and on-farm training so that people can grow with us.

A bunch of gerberas looks simple in a supermarket bucket. Behind it are hands that cut it at the right stage, cooled it quickly, graded it by stem length and bloom size, and packed it so it arrives standing up. This post is a thank-you to those hands.
